It’s as important as ever to shop local

“When you buy from a small business, you’re not helping a CEO buy a 3rd holiday home. You’re helping pay a mortgage, put food on a family’s table and give a little girl get dance lessons. Shop local”

I saw this quote on the internet and tweaked it slightly. Before I started my own business I liked to shop local where possible, but I didn’t think fully about the implications. Now, I will do all I can to shop local.

I don’t have anything against the big chains, in fact some of them produce some really lovely items. However, nothing beats buying from a small business.

I know how much each order means to me. That buzz I get when I get the ping of an email or the ring of phone. It means that someone has trusted me enough to spend their money with me and wants me to capture memories either for themselves or someone they love. In return I will treat every order as if I was making it for myself and give it all the love and care it deserves. I like to involve my customers in their orders and will often liaise with the throughout the production process so that their order is made completely unique to then. It is this personal touch that you can’t get from the big stores.

Shopping local doesn’t have to just mean businesses like mine that operate primarily via the internet and craft fairs. It can also mean the local florist, bakers, butchers, café or restaurant. Every owner has taken that brave step to move away from security of employment and become self-employed. We should applaud their bravery and realise just how much difference each sale makes.

When you write that shopping list for Christmas this year and are thinking about what to buy for the people you love. I urge you to consider the small local businesses that you follow on Facebook and Instagram, that you often walk past through the village or town. If you can, do buy from them. Not only will you be served with love and care but you will be helping support someone’s dreams.

Why you should shop local this Christmas

“When you buy from a small business, you’re not helping a CEO buy a 3rd holiday home. You’re helping a little girl get dance lessons, a little boy his team jersey, Mums and Dad’s put food on the table. Shop local” I saw this quote on the internet. I couldn’t put it better myself. Before I… Continue Reading

Ordering Early

With this being only my second Christmas with Two Green Lane, I still sometimes think more as a customer than a business owner when it comes to Christmas. If I’m honest, I shudder at the thought of having to talk about Christmas from October. It feels far too early. However with a business like mine… Continue Reading

Discovering the world of online marketplaces

Running a personalised business, I have to plan ahead with Christmas and order cut off times are a lot sooner than if I sold pre-made items. As a result I was looking on one of the Kent Trader forums on Facebook for inspiration for Christmas events and saw an advert for an online market… Continue Reading

Why I started Two Green Lane

When I launched my business I was very diligent in writing a blog once a week. I then changed the frequency to every 2 weeks and unsurprisingly it has now been a few months since I wrote a few words. Call it a mid-year resolution, but I’m going to try and revert back to… Continue Reading

Having fun with March Meet The Maker

If you follow me on Instagram, you would have seen lots of activity in March. I took part in March Meet the Maker by Joanne Hawker. She set a challenge where everyday had a theme and you had to post a photo related to that theme. The idea of this was for my current followers… Continue Reading

Never Too Old

We’ve done a few craft fairs and events since we launched. We find that people have similar queries when asking us about our jewellery. We also often overhear comments of people talking to each other about our products. We’ve found that one of the most common misconceptions is that people believe their children are too… Continue Reading

Helping People Say Goodbye

We have written before about how over time we have learnt that what we make is more than a piece of jewellery to many people. It can capture moments, memories and can tell a story. It can also have an important role in helping people say goodbye. When we launched last year, we immediately had… Continue Reading

His and Hers

Before Christmas we were approached to produce a double order for a husband and wife. They wanted his and hers identical charms featuring the handprint of their little girl. The wife wanted hers on a snake chain and the husband wanted his on a plaited leather bracelet. We loved this idea so have decided to… Continue Reading

New Year, New Goals

So, as mentioned in last weeks post, Christmas is over! This means it’s the New Year which means new year, new goals! Having had a few days off at Christmas, we were so raring to tackle the opportunities for the new year, we started working on January 2nd -technically a bank holiday! Last year, May… Continue Reading

Our 1st Christmas

Yes, we’re back! It seems like a very long time since we last wrote to you. We’re sure there was something happening during that time. Ah yes, Our 1st Christmas! How could we forget about that. The build up was busy which is why we slowed down on the blogging. But it was busy… Continue Reading

Celebrating Small Business Saturday

Saturday 3rd December it was Small Business Saturday. This was a day for supporting those who have taken that big leap of starting up their own business. Often these businesses are a one man band and sometimes they have a few employees. But the most important things is that they are small and not a… Continue Reading

A Weekend by the Sea

After the previous weekend being part of the Wealden Times Midwinter Fair with over 200 stall holders and grand elaborate stands, this weekend we experienced a very different craft fair. We packed up our jewellery and headed down to Rye Harbour for a weekend by the sea. Every year, Avocet Gallery in Rye Harbour put… Continue Reading

Our First Craft Fair

It finally arrived, our first craft fair. And what a way to start, with the Wealden Times Midwinter Fair. I have plenty of experience in trade shows so felt fairly prepared, even if the experience was in beer trade shows. However, the first learning was that they are very different. We spent a lot… Continue Reading

The big build up

So far the only way we have communicated with all our wonderful customers has been digitally via Facebook, Instagram, email and our website. Being a company that prides itself on the personal touch we felt it was time to get out and about and meet some of you. We are very excited to say that… Continue Reading

Taking your precious fingerprints

Last week we busted the myth that taking hand, foot and fingerprints was difficult. This week, we’ll do the same with fingerprints. It’s a different process, but just as fun and just as easy. Once you place your order online we will send you out a kit that contains one pot of white putty, one pot… Continue Reading

Taking your precious hand, foot and paw prints

One of the questions we get asked most here at Two Green Lane is how we get your precious hand, foot, finger and paw prints. Sometimes people get nervous about ordering online as they don’t understand the process. In next weeks blog we will chat to you about the fingerprints but today we are… Continue Reading

The Balancing Act

We have spoken a lot over the past few weeks about our business and our hard work getting it up and running. What we haven’t written about is how we balance this alongside raising a child.   When Two Green Lane was started, I set the following Personal Mission statement… “Having left my job… Continue Reading

Everybody Needs Good Friends

This week we wanted to chat a little about the importance of friends. But this blog isn’t about focusing on how friends can impact our personal lives, but how they can impact our business lives through Facebook.   So, it turns out that a Facebook business account is actually pretty clever. If you post something… Continue Reading
